In the past, surgeons have asked, “Which patients should receive palliative care?” Today we must ask, “Who should not?”
In a viewpoint published in JAMA Surgery, CSPH Director Zara Cooper, MD, MSc, and Rachelle E. Bernacki, MD, MS, describe key lessons learned from palliative care that directly translate to the treatment of COVID-19 patients, including communication strategies for establishing goals of care, treating total pain, and caring for the family unit.
